Is Better than Bouillon gluten free?

Many of our bases could be considered gluten free, but since we do not test specifically for gluten at this time, we are unable to make claims regarding the gluten content in each of the bases. However, I can help you if you have a question about one of the ingredients and where it is derived from so that you can make a personal decision about whether or not you can eat the product.

Does Better than Bouillon contain MSG?

Our bases do not contain any added MSG or ingredients with added MSG. If MSG is present in any of our items, it will be shown on the label. We work closely with the government regulatory agencies (FDA & USDA), as well as specialist certification bodies like Quality Assurance International (for organic items) to ensure that our ingredient statements are accurate and transparent.

Is Autolyzed Yeast Extract the same as MSG? Is it in Better than Bouillon?

Autolyzed Yeast Extract is an ingredient used by food companies as a flavor enhancer. It is not chemically the same as MSG, but it does contain naturally occurring glutamates, resulting from the process used to break yeast down into its component parts. If Autolyzed Yeast Extract is present in any of our items, it will be shown on the label. What is Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein? Is it the same as MSG? Is it in Better than Bouillon?

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) is an ingredient used by food companies as a flavor enhancer, and is recognized as safe by the FDA. It is made from cereals or legumes (corn, wheat or soybeans). HVP is not chemically the same as MSG. It does contain free glutamic acid — a by-product of the manufacturing process. If Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein is present in any of our items, it will be shown on the label. What is the shelf life of Better Than Bouillon?

Better Than Bouillon should be refrigerated after opening, and we guarantee its performance until the “Best By” date. Any jar of Better Than Bouillon that is older than the “Best By” date should be discarded.

How do you read the expiration date on your packaging?

The date shown on the lid is the expiration date. If the product is past its expiration date, we recommend that you throw it out.

Are Better Than Bouillon jars vacuumed sealed?

We do not vacuum seal our jars so it will not pop when it is first opened. Our jars have a tear-off safety seal. As long as the clear safety seal is intact when you bought the product it is safe to eat. We are committed to the highest levels of food safety and product quality.

Oil has separated to the top of my jar of Better Than Bouillon. Does that mean it is bad?

This is perfectly normal, and occurs because we don’t use additives to keep all the ingredients from separating. It’s like natural peanut butter – just give it a stir to recombine everything, and you’re good to go!

The color of my Better Than Bouillon has darkened. Does this mean it has gone bad?

No, there is nothing wrong when Better Than Bouillon gets darker when stored. That’s because every jar of Better Than Bouillon starts with real meat, seafood or vegetables, so some color changes are natural and will happen over time.

What is Maltodextrin? What is the source of Maltodextrin?

Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate used to control water activity and as a bulking agent. The Maltodetrin used in

Better Than Bouillon is made from corn, and Maltodextrin is recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Do we use any sort of Peanuts or Tree nuts in our facilities?

Some designated production lines may contain traces of coconut. If an allergen may be present in our base, we will list it on the ingredient statement.

Is there any potential for contamination from other products you manufacture?

We thoroughly wash down and sanitize our production equipment between product runs, so the risk of cross contamination is minimal. We have made significant investments (people & money) to ensure that our products have the highest levels of food safety and product quality.

Is Better Than Bouillon dairy, egg or lactose-free?

Since we don’t test for the presence of these substances, we cannot make representations or claims that our Bases are free of them. Our labels adhere strictly to USDA or FDA labeling requirements, and we are committed to accuracy and transparency in labeling.

Is Better Than Bouillon fat free?

Is the ingredient statement on my jar of Better Than Bouillon accurate?

Better Than Bouillon uses the highest quality ingredients and our ingredient statements strictly adhere to USDA and FDA labeling requirements. To help consumers make dietary choices that work best for them, we offer a variety of product formats, including our meat-, vegetable- and seafood-first “Black label” food bases, as well as Natural, Reduced Sodium, Organic and reduced Sodium Organic bases.

When will Better Than Bouillon have a Pork base?

We currently have no plans for a pork base; however, we would suggest using our tasty ham base instead.

Are any of your products vegetarian (or certified vegan)?

Our vegetable bases are vegan certified.

Are the reduced sodium items “reduced sodium” or “low sodium”?

They are reduced sodium, which means they contain at least 25% less sodium per serving than the sodium in

Similar food. The amount of sodium per serving is too high to be considered low sodium. Sodium is one of the ingredients we use to keep Better Than Bouillon shelf stable, so dramatically reducing the sodium level would result in a significant reduction in shelf life.

What are natural flavors in BTB?

Chicken Base — Onion Powder, Extractive of Celery & black pepper.

Turkey Base — Celery oil

What is the source of the caramel color?

The caramel color is derived from sugar.

What percentage of the ingredients in Organic Better Than Bouillon are organic?

Our organic bases contain at least 95% certified organic ingredients, and are certified by Quality Assurance International, the premier global certifying body. Our Organic meat bases are also certified organic by the USDA.
